(079) More Than An Affair

More Thank An Affair

"You know, most of the time, you think you deserve it." - Jesus

Every Friday John Eldredge releases a Weekly Video (wildatheart.org) for Wild At Heart allies. These are brief videos where he offers timely, personal thoughts about how to keep Jesus at the center of your life.

This past week John reflected on the affair most of us have with convenience and our response when that convenience is disrupted. You know how it is; when the line at the gas station, Walmart, or Starbucks gets long and you must wait. When your internet connection degrades and your two second query takes 20 seconds to complete. When your Next-Day Amazon package isn't.

As I listened to John talk about our love affair with convenience I heard Jesus say, "You know, most of the time, you think you deserve it."

Busted.

The truth is we are not just having an affair. It goes much deeper than we realize. Think about it for a moment. With an affair, you know it is wrong; but you do it anyway, hoping to get away with it. But we are having more than an affair with convenience.

Convenience is so pervasive in our lives that the expectation of convenience has become unconsciously embedded deep within our heart to the point that we truly believe we deserve it. We don't simply hope to get away with it; we believe we deserve convenience. Which is why we get so frustrated and angry when our expectations are not realized.

The World tells me, and my flesh believes, that I deserve Same-Day delivery, fully prepared meals on my doorstep in 30 minutes or less, and a double shot latte Macchiato without having to leave my car.

It's become about more than just convenience. It's become a right enshrined as the 11th commandment of my heart and stands right up there with "Thou shall not murder."

Maybe I am alone in this but I don't think so. Check your heart the next time you're stuck in a long line at a store, backed up in traffic, your technology isn't working, or don't receive a delivery when expected and tell me I'm wrong.

To be honest, I had to repent, ask God's forgiveness, and turn my heart back to Jesus in the place where I had come to embrace the right to and the expectation of convenience. I had to shift the posture of my heart from an expectation of convenience to the expectancy of blessing. From what my flesh and the World tell me I deserve to the unlimited possibilities of God.

I encourage you to give it a try. You might find a bit of freedom you didn't realize you had lost.

"So if the Son sets you free, you will be free indeed." - John 8:36
