(074) Advent and The Second Comings of Christ

(073) The Fruit Of Love In Turbulent Times

The people walking in darkness have seen a great light; on those living in the land of deep darkness a light has dawned. – Isaiah 9:2

This past Sunday we entered the season of Advent. Those of you in more liturgical denominations know what the season of Advent is and what it is we remember, celebrate, and anticipate.

For the rest, the term Advent simply means to come or arrive. Advent is our remembrance that the Lord Jesus Christ first came into the world as a baby in a manger. A baby who would grow up, show us the Father, suffer and die on a cross for the forgiveness of our sin, and be raised to life from his tomb that we too might find eternal life in him.

So, we celebrate his first coming, his first Advent, through the themes of hope, peace, joy, and love. At the same time, we look forward with anticipation to his Second Coming, his promised return.

As you lean into the Advent season, I want to give you a new question to consider.

What if there are two “Second Comings” of Jesus? Two second Advents? Now, before you tune me out, hear me out.

Paul tells the Ephesians (and us),

Then Christ will make his home in your hearts as you trust in him. Your roots will grow down into God’s love and keep you strong.” – Ephesians 3:17 NLT

Jesus himself prays to the Father for us in John,

I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— I in them and you in me...” – John 17:22-23

And once again, Paul tells the Colossians,

To them God has chosen to make known among the Gentiles the glorious riches of this mystery, which is Christ in you, the hope of glory.” – Colossians 1:27

I know, when the Church talks about the Second Coming of Jesus, we are usually talking about his Second physical Advent here on earth when all things are restored and made new.

But the Bible also has much to say about Christ indwelling our hearts AFTER his resurrection. His presence within us, daily. More real and truer than most of us could conceive when we first put our faith in him. It is as real, maybe more real, than sitting down for breakfast with a close friend at your favorite restaurant. And, in his presence we are new creations (2 Corinthians 5:17).

So, I encourage you beloved, as you remember and celebrate the meaning of Christ’s First physical Advent, give some thought to both of his Second Comings. His Second spiritual Advent, the one at work within you, here and now. And his Second physical Advent, the one we anticipate.

The Advent where all evil, pain, death, and loss will be removed from the world. The Advent when darkness will be no more, and a great light will shine for all to see. The Advent that will make all things new. The Advent where, in true God of the universe fashion, nothing is lost, and his Second spiritual Advent in us is perfected.
